I have been told that Haiti was the origination-
the original nation
the birth of inspiration for a people
I have heard through winds blown
that Haiti was the birth of negritude.
The realm for the creation of a black aptitude
Your dark skin
and dark eyes
perpetuated, cultivated a culture.
You are the original fist
of black power.
Through you we’ve found
that our voices rise louder.
“Haiti is a country built on the basis of perseverance. We are the first black independent nation. We are Culture. We are survivors. Our country has been robbed for centuries by the colonizers. We have been plagued by racism for centuries (note: The 80’s AIDS epidemic being stigmatized as a disease “brought” to the U.S. by Haitians). We are the country poisoned by the UN Officials who act surprised when there is a cholera outbreak (we know y’all were the source). We are the country damaged in many ways by corruption both in Haiti and internationally by other countries (including the U.S). We are the country that suffered one of the worst earthquakes known to mankind. BUT we are survivors. We are fighters. We are dreamers. We are creators. We are Haitian. I am proud that this is the blood that runs through my veins. I am proud that I was raised speaking Kreyol and eating Haitian delicacies and listening to Kompa. I am proud that though I am ‘from’ the United States, I am 100% Haitian. To my core. To my roots. “For you, Haiti, are the creation of the black essence.”
