LIBYA SLAVE TRADE: WHAT EXACTLY YOU NEED TO KNOW
A video published by CNN went Viral as it showed Africans being auctioned as slaves in Libya and the world went crazy about this.
Seriously, it’s 2017 and we’re still talking about slavery? This got on many people’s nerves.
In the video, it showed one of the salesmen putting emphasis on how the black man has the strength to dig. “This is a digger, a strong man, he’ll dig”. He said.
According to CNN, a large percent of the African being auctioned were Nigerians.
But why is there slave trade in Libya?
You see, Libya is the only transit point for illegal immigrants to reach Europe and most of them attempt to pass through the Mediterranean Sea.
Unfortunately, many of them drown and others are caught by the authorities. In addition to this most of them are raped, tortured and Murdered.
International Organization for Migration (IOM), the U.N.’s migration agency States that at least 3,000 immigrants have died while attempting to cross over the Mediterranean Sea.
It’s also estimated that 400- 1 million immigrants are now trapped in Libya.
Former US president Barrack Obama has been caught on record saying that, the Libyan fiasco was one of the worst mistakes. This is because it has led to innocent African immigrants to pursue greener pastures to Europe only to be trapped in Libya.
What can be done to solve the slave trade in Libya?
What’s happening in Libya will not be solved by a bunch of viral videos or news. Not even a few dishonest petitions will help.
Our leaders will not just wake up one day and see the light. What need to be done to solve this once and for all is to improve the livelihoods of the people in Africa.
This is a good time for Africa to get back to their senses and understand that they have to emancipate themselves from the mental slavery of our leaders and free up their minds.
By freeing up their minds, they need to speak against corrupt leaders and government official who will only lead them deep into poverty.
As earlier mentioned, 90% of the Africans were sold to Libya as slaves were trying to cross over and get a good life in Europe.
African people are Misled mainly through social media and other online platforms that there is a happy future for them over in Europe. Once they give in to this lies the smugglers have the chance to sell them as slaves.
I believe the pictures and videos posted should shake the conscience out of us all.
Finally, the destination for illegal migrants might change but African needs to understand that seeking refuge illegally in other countries puts their lives at risk.
Harriet Tubman who was born into slavery in the South America in 1822 escaped and went back to lead slaves to freedom in the north.
She insisted that freedom is one’s personal responsibility. “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves”. Harriet said.
